2nd Chakra – Sacral Chakra

2nd Chakra – Sacral – Water, movement, sexuality, pleasure, emotions, feelings, change. 

SEX.

Sometimes it’s 2 bodies trying to become 1 (or sometimes just one alone). No matter how you look at it, it requires a body.

When it comes to the body, sex encompasses all the qualities of the second chakra: movement, desire, pleasure, sensation, emotion, attachment, surrender, polarity, and opening to another. Not that all these aspects necessarily involve sex, but sex necessarily involves all these aspects. These qualities are what make living in a body so fulfilling – the rich sensation of taking in the world around us: bright orange sunsets and smells after a rain, or the tender touch of a lover.

The first chakra is grounded in instinct – the most base level of consciousness, yet necessary for our survival. In second chakra, our consciousness is one step more sophisticated: the emotional information we get from tuning into our bodies, and from the sometimes glorious and other times challenging experience of mixing energies with another person who is different from ourselves. All serve to enhance our embodiment and all serve to expand our consciousness.

Second chakra invites us to move. Sing to the skies. Be wild. Feel the earth move. Heal the planet. Howl. Read a poem with emotion and passion. Be childlike and free. Indulge yourself.

Exercise to stimulate your sexuality:

Lie on your back, with your knees bent and the soles of your feet together. (Supta baddha konasana). Close your eyes. Relax your body, and breathe deeply into your pelvis, feeling the breath enter the second chakra with a warm, orange glow that surrounds your sex organs. Feel the warmth increasing with each breath as it grows and glows around those organs.

On the next exhalation, move your knees together s-l-o-w-l-y. Then move them apart again s-l-o-w-l-y on the following inhalation. Continue this movement with long deep breaths, opening and closing your legs, with the in and out breaths. Continue this for two or three minutes. Feel the charge building up in the pelvis. As it builds, you can either take it directly into sexuality with yourself or with a lover, or allow your body to move in any way that distributes the charge to your whole body, rather than having it remain in your sexual organs. (This is especially important if you find yourself uncomfortable with these feelings due to past traumas or abuse – it’s a way of flushing out this chakra until the feelings become more comfortable.)

Experience this feeling deep within your being. When you rise and return to the here and now, that chakra will be energized, and you will feel sexier and more alive.

PLAY

The body loves to play. When we were children, we moved our bodies in random fashion, unselfconsciously. As we grew up and learned to inhibit our movements, we got serious about life and forgot how to play. Our bodies froze up, got stiff and achy, and rigidity set in blocking the fluidity of the second chakra. 

Exercise:

Close your eyes and imagine yourself at 5 or 6 years old. Did you like to dress up? Or twirl around like a ballerina? Did you like to skip? Maybe you liked going outside looking at the ants in the grass? Finger painting? Playing with dolls or trucks? We never outgrow the need for play and the pure joy it brings. Write down 3 things that you enjoyed as a kid that you no longer do. Take ½ hour this week (that’s 0.25% of your week!) to do a version of it. For example, if you liked climbing trees, you could go and hug a tree or go to a climbing gym. You can even play with your food! Even better find someone to play WITH who will get silly with you.

You have no idea how this can seriously transform the habits of seriousness, into light and goofy moments. Break down the inhibitions that set in as you became an adult. Allow that free, fun, and fearless side of you to come out!
